Assegnati i primi pesanti premi della critica USA votati in questo caso dai membri del National Board of Review. Miglior film è l'ultimo lavoro di Jason Reitman che in generale ha ottenuto grandi consensi tra critica e pubblico; chissà ke non parta da qui la scalata del film all'Oscar. Miglior regista è l'immortale Clint Eastwood, la cui mano dietro la macchina da presa è ormai inconfondibile e apprezzata ad ogni sua opera. Parimerito tra gli attori protagonisti mentre Carey Mulligan esce vincitrice da quello che pare oramai un duello inevitabile con Meryl Streep. Piccola sorpresa tra i non protagonisti dove la spuntano Harrelson e la giovane Kendrick.
